Creswick campus

The University of Melbourne acknowledges that Creswick campus is located on Dja Dja Wurrung land.

Our scientists include plant geneticists, hydrologists, geomorphologists, soil scientists, fire scientists, ecologists, mathematicians, and engineers. These experts are collaborating to investigate a number of complex challenges including post-fire hydraulic and erosion processes in Australia, and the effects of fire on carbon content in forest soil, litter and understory. One of our academics is sequencing the Eucalyptus tree genome, for the development of plantation trees with a number of properties sought by commercial enterprise.

Research at Creswick has a long history of support from the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment. This support has helped equip Creswick with analytical, teaching, microscopy and Forest Industry Laboratories. The campus has an extensive range of tree species, is near to a 610 hectare demonstration forest and is adjacent to Victorian Timber Industries Training Centre and Creswick Landcare Centre, which allows students access to a sawmill and nursery.

Waste Wise Certification

The Waste Wise program is a practical, step-by-step program inspiring organisations to minimise waste and maximise the efficient use of valuable resources in their day-to-day activities. This initiative was developed by Sustainability Victoria and offers certification to organisations that make a commitment to reducing their waste and they can be certified at either Bronze, Silver or Gold levels.

Joining the Waste Wise program in 2007, The Creswick campus action plan drew together ideas on reducing waste, energy and water consumption. Achievements included a 70% reduction in water use, a 46% reduction in paper consumption, a 33% reduction in the number of kilometers driven, and a 14% reduction in gas use. Having received a bronze level certificate, we are now formulating additional plans to tackle further aspects of our consumption and carbon emissions. Our new plan will be part of the Resource Smart program, which has a greater emphasis on water, transport, and energy as well as waste.
