Cartographic and Spatial Services

The Faculty has a full-time cartographer, who has extensive experience in all aspects of cartographic work, and is a member of the Mapping Sciences Institute of Australia and a cartography editor of the Journal of Maps.

Cartography and Visualisation

The cartographer provides academic staff and graduate students with cartographic services to produce high-quality maps, figures and illustrations (including technical drawings). They can be customised to suit specific requirements for all types of publications (books, journals, research reports etc.). The cartographer can also assist with preparation of maps and graphics for conference presentations, posters, flyers and other forms of communication.

Technical support can be also be provided to academic staff involved in teaching courses with some cartographic content.

Student Assistance

Graduate and Honours students can seek advice on all cartographic matters.

If you are a Graduate student, you can get assistance with maps and figures for your theses. The cartographer can also advice you on GIS work, location of data sources, and how to access and use them.

Maps

The cartographer maintains a map collection for teaching and research, with main focused on Australia. This includes topographic maps of Australia 1:50 000, 1:100 000, 1:250 000, 1:1, 000, 000 and Victoria 1:25 000 and geological maps of Melbourne and Victoria. In addition we have some aeronautical charts (scale 1:1, 000, 000) and some aerial photographs. Staff and students can borrow these for a limited time.

Equipment

Researchers conducting fieldwork to capture data in the field for subsequent processing can borrow a variety of equipment, such as GPS devices, stereoscopes, transcribing machines, tape recorders and opisometers.
